Kildeer's Principal's Message

A Look Back...

Cultural Arts Assembly ~ Students loved our first cultural arts assembly this year on Wednesday.  Imagination Theatre performed a Social Emotional Learning centered event, Ease the Tease.  Through an engaging, humorous format, they focused on empowering children to respond safely and effectively to teasing in a way that stops it in its tracks.  Even close friends may cross lines at times to tease one another.  How we respond can escalate or deescalate a situation.  Responding in an appropriate way helps our children see that they have choices, are in control, and can demonstrate leadership behaviors through their interactions under these circumstances.  Our continued work this year around Social Emotional Learning will embrace the strategies that were taught at the assembly.  Here are some talking points for you to touch on and reinforce with your chid(ren) at home:

  • What is the difference between friendly and hurtful teasing?
  • When you know hurtful teasing is happening to you, the first thing you should do is use self talk.  Say to yourself, "Stop.  I know I'm being teased.  I'm smart.  I can handle this."  This keeps kids from getting angry and feeding into the teasing, escalating the situation.
  • Say "So? I'm o.k. with that," in a respectful way (without attitude).  This shows we are o.k. with what they are saying and we don't mind (i.e., being teased for wearing glasses, allergies, or something we can't change about ourselves).
  • Ignore and walk away, including eye contact.  Exiting out of the situation is highly effective and puts you in control.
  • Use an "I message".  "I feel bad when you... I wish you would not do that."
  • Be a buddy.  If you see someone getting teased, or somebody else is encouraging you to tease or exclude someone, stand up for the other person by staying calm and strong.  "I would like to play with Joe, he's always been nice to me."
Thank you to our PTO for this powerful assembly.  This was truly a gift to us!  The students had a great time and learned life-long tools!

A Look Ahead...

Picture Day~ Monday, October 15th.  Forms have been sent home with students and must be turned in no later than the morning of Picture Day in order for packages to be ordered. You can find a copy of the form on our website (see below).

Mock Presidential Election ~ Kildeer’s Mock Election festivities will kick off on Monday, October 15th. We have scheduled many educational and fun experiences for our students. Kildeer students will show their patriotism by registering to vote, reading about the candidates on our bulletin board, participating in the “If I was President” activity (download) and voting in our mock election on Monday, Nov. 5th. Results will be announced before the end of the day and will be coming home with your child on Monday, November 5th.

Following along with our 1st Trimester theme, “Together We Can Make A Difference”, each week leading up to our election, we’ll be On the Campaign Trail with our very own Cougar Platform:

            Week of October 15th
Very good friends make great leaders. Friends use kind words to each other no matter
whom they voted for. Friends are courteous and care for the feeling of others.
            Week of October 22nd
Oh the joy we feel to be an American. We say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing our
National Anthem. This is like the pride our Cougars show for  the Kildeer Pledge and
                        the Cougar 5.
            Week of October 29th
Thankful and grateful we are for our independence so that we can make our own
choices and freely vote for our government leaders. Leaders are honest and responsible.
            Week of November 5th
Enrich your dreams because America allows you to have dreams of democracy and
gives us many freedoms. It builds our self-esteem to know that we all have an equal
voice and equal choice in our elections.

One of the new forms that you will find on-line is “I Can Make A Difference”. Kildeer students will show how they can make a difference if he/she were President. Download this sheet, and have your child  include a photo or drawn picture and complete the question stem.  Donʼt forget student's name and teacherʼs name and then return it to school to be displayed. This is not a required activity just an opportunity to get their voice heard.  We are interested in a child’s view of the Office of the President. We are taking a nonpartisan approach to this process.

Please check upcoming blogs for more information on our activities and for chances to volunteer during our mock election.
