A Look Back...
Keepin' Up With Kildeer ~ Thank you to our parents that attended the Parent/Principal meeting this week! It's so fun to get to sit down and connect about all of the great things happening at Kildeer. We reviewed the upcoming topics for our meetings this year and generated discussion questions for future meetings under each topic that would benefit parents, including:- Common Core Standards-How much more rigorous are the standards and in what ways? What is the PAARC assessment I've heard about? How is MAP assessment different now? How does District 96/Kildeer choose learning targets for kids? What are the new grading practices exactly, and how is it beneficial to student learning?
- 21st Century Learning-What exactly does this term mean? What does it encompass? What do our kids do in ICTC? How do we make sure our kids are safe when they are on the internet at home/school? What programs/websites/tools/technologies do kids have regular access to? What tools are available for kids at home through Kildeer's website?
- Practices of a Professional Learning Community (PLC)-What is a PLC and how does it change how teachers work in District 96? How are kids assessed (frequency and how)? How can we help our children if they are worried about a test? What is a CFA and how do parents and teachers use it to help students? How does Kildeer differentiate for students? What happens during intervention block?
- Transition to Middle School-How do all of the practices that are standard at Kildeer transfer to Woodlawn? This includes social emotional learning, assessment practices, access to technology, and grading.
- Five Competencies we focus on for social emotional learning-See the CASEL website to learn more.
- Cougar 5 expected behaviors & Cougar Paws
- Cougar Paw Patrol for 4th and 5th graders-See Prior Principal's Messages
- Cougar Communities-Every classroom will have a buddy classroom this year. We're pairing younger grades with older grades and having 4 specific learning opportunities utilizing this structure. In this model we provide leadership opportunities for our older students and learning opportunities for all students around social emotional learning.
Institute Day~Today was a very productive day for our staff. Teachers spent the day with other educators from the Area 125 (Stevenson) Consortium. We heard from Nancy Frey, an expert in the field of literacy. In addition, teachers collaborated with colleagues in order to debrief on 21st century literacy skills.
A Look Ahead...
Calling All 2nd Grade Parents! ~ District 96 parents of 2nd graders are encouraged to come to Kildeer School to attend the district wide MATH NIGHT FOR GRADE 2 PARENTS on Tues., Oct. 16, 7:00–8:00 p.m. Math specialists Arlene Steinberg and Lisa Zimmerman will lead a lively workshop so District 96 parents of 2nd graders can learn and practice the focus algorithms their students will be using this year in math. I look forward to seeing you there!
From the Kildeer Office ~ If you registered your child for any after school programs (School Program, Scouts, Park District) meeting at Kildeer, we will assume that he/she may attend that program unless we hear differently from you via a morning note. Please discuss after school plans with your child before he/she leaves the house in the morning. Thank you for your help in this matter.
D96 SEL Book Talk~ Don't miss the opportunity to join parents across District 96 in reading selected chapters from the book Building Resilience in Children & Teens: Giving Kids Roots & Wings by Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg. Our school has multiple copies of this book available in our school office for parents to check out, read (selected chapters only, please), & return. This "reading assignment" addresses multiple Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies–essential social and emotional skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will help your child succeed. Parents and educators who already have read it say it is well written and well worth your time.
Then, in November, working in collaboration with the D96 Parent-to-Parent Network, Student Services Director Kimberly Dahlem and Asst. Student Services Director Kim Lechner will lead a discussion of selected chapters of the book (approx. 80 pp.), which discuss resilience & stress, competence & confidence, character, and more. That book talk will take place at Ivy Hall Elementary School in the "Mat Room" on Tues., Nov. 13, at 9:30 a.m.
Books are available for you to check out, read, and return now through Nov. 12. I hope you will sign out a copy from our school office and join this SEL book study as we work together to give our students "roots and wings."

Halloween Costumes ~ On October 31 the children should bring their Halloween costume to school. As you are shopping for or crafting the perfect costume, please keep a few things in mind for a school appropriate costume.
- "Kid friendly" in ease of changing: Children come to school in their regular clothes and must change into their costumes independently after lunch. Any hair color or makeup must be applied before coming to school.
- "Kid friendly" for content: No weapons (real or fake!), blood, super scariness, or general ickiness should be a part of the costume. Any hair color or makeup must be simple and should not distract anyone from learning for the day. Also, we assume all costumes will follow our school dress code, meaning no bare tummies or inappropriate clothing (content or fit). Masks following all of the aforementioned guidelines may be worn for the parade, however, not on the bus or throughout the school day.
