Evening Story Time
Last night was so much fun as our incoming first graders (now Kindergartners) visited Kildeer.  Our current first graders were there to share in the fun and our Student Council Cougars were on hand lending their support.  The evening was filled with stories read by Kildeer staff and activities from our PTO volunteers.  We were overflowing with excitement watching these little ones gain a sense of the fun that awaits them at Kildeer.  Thank you to all who supported this event to make it such a warm welcome for our mini-Cougars!

Author Visit
Children were captivated during our visit from author, Candace Fleming.  Each grade level had their own personal time with Ms. Fleming, who presented something different for every grade, just perfect for their age.  It was truly a special treat to have an author who tailored her visit so beautifully for the children.  Each unique lesson had the common theme of encouraging kids to be careful observers, using their eyes and ears as their "writing tools" to capture small moments in life.  I was able to sit in on the 4th grade's experience where they created a story together using a strategy, CLAPS (Character, Location, Action, Problem, and Solution).  The kids were doubled over in laughter as they collaboratively crafted their story of the annoyingly happy, one eyed parrot and his experience in a retirement home.  You'll have to take my word for it...it was priceless!  Thank you to our PTO and parents for the opportunity to have these special events for our students.  Thank you to Mrs. Schumer, who worked closely with Ms. Fleming to provide this incredible experience and to our parents who supported this work.  I'm sure there will be plenty of Candace Fleming books on hand at our Spring Book Fair next week, including one of her favorites at my house, Muncha, Muncha, Muncha!  Click here to see photos and check out the most recent Learning Center news.

A Look Ahead...

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week
We look forward to honoring our teachers next week during teacher appreciation week! The PTO has many yummy celebrations prepared to thank our faculty and staff for their hard work. Please help me thank our wonderful teachers and assistants for all that they do!

Spring Map Testing Begins Monday
The Measures of Academic Progress assessment, or MAP, will be administered during the weeks of April 30th and May 7th. As you recall, MAP measures students’ progress over the course of the school year in the areas of reading and math. The computerized assessment is one way that we measure students’ academic growth over the course of the school year. You will receive a copy of your child’s cumulative results at the end of the year. Your child’s data will be included with his/her trimester three report card.

ABC Countdown Begins Wednesday
I can't believe I'm saying this, but our Kildeer ABC Countdown to Summer begins next week, on Wednesday, May 2nd!  That's right, only 26 days of school left this year, beginning on Wednesday!  Click here to take a look at the ABC Countdown Calendar to help your child be prepared for our special days.  I'll also keep you updated week to week on the Calendar Highlights found at the bottom of this message.
