A Look Back...
District 96 Foundation Dinner ~ We enjoyed a snowy evening together last Friday night, honoring retirees and District 96 Foundation award winners. Jo Fryer and Sherry Moore, 1st grade teachers, were honored for their upcoming retirement. We recognized them for their years of dedication to our students. Shirlee Nickow received the Frank Rosas Red Schoolhouse Award. Cindy Lebovitz received the Silver Thread Award. Thank you to Jo, Sherry, Shirlee, and Cindy, for their commitment to the students of Kildeer School and District 96.
Grade 1 ~ Beach Day ~ First grade found some winter relief with Beach Day today. Throughout the day, kids completed their work by the pool or while lounging on a towel. The students were beaming all day!
Grade 2 ~ High-Touch/High-Tech ~ Second graders enjoyed a visit from High-Touch/High Tech this week. Take a look at the highly engaging, hands-on, science learning.
A Look Ahead...
Keepin' Up With Kildeer!
In response to the power outage our last parent/principal meeting was canceled. Topics have been combined to accommodate a tight schedule. Meetings are from 9:30-10:30 a.m. If you plan on attending I ask that you R.S.V.P. so we are able to plan our space accordingly. R.S.V.P. to Mrs. Gioviano at ggioviano@kcsd96.org, or give us a call at 847-634-3243. Please join us for conversations as described below:
- February 24th: Topics discussed will include literacy, technology, and differentiation. The visit will include a walk through the building where we'll stop to talk to a teacher and specialists to learn how collaborative teaming at Kildeer supports student learning.
- April 13th: Fifth Grade Parents, mark your calendars! Principal of Woodlawn Middle School, Mr. Grana, and Assistant Principal, Mr. Murphy, will join us to discuss transitioning to middle school.
Follow up from December's Keepin' Up With Kildeer: Parents were looking for book recommendations to support conversations with their children around our Human Growth and Development topic. Following are a few titles that you may find helpful. I noticed on Amazon you're able to get a glimpse of some inside pages to see if they're something you're comfortable with:
- It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health (Candlewick, 2004) for ages 10 and up
- It’s So Amazing! A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families (Candlewick, 2004) for ages 4-8
- The Care and Keeping of You (American Girl Library) (1998) for ages 8 and up
Homework Requests Following Student Absence
Guidelines for requesting homework following a student absence are outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook as follows:
- If a student is absent for only one day, assignments should be obtained from his or her teacher(s) upon return to school. If the student is going to be absent for a longer period, homework requests may be made to the school office. Homework will be available for a parent to pick up within 24 hours.
Please note that homework requests are available for parent pick up, according to the handbook. Depending on particular details of the circumstance (i.e., timing), we are generally able to accommodate sending homework home with another student. Please understand, however, that sending homework through email is not something we are able to do.
Girls on the Run
Only one more week to sign up for the Girls on the Run program! This fantastic program combines training for a 5K (3.1 mile) running event with lesson plans designed to promote positive choices and an active lifestyle. The Girls on the Run curriculum is open to 3rd-5th grade girls and will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30 each week for 12 weeks from March to June. To register for the program please check out the link on the Kildeer website. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. The deadline for registration is February 1st. For more information on the program you can check out their website at http://www.gotrchicago.org/index.html
District Parent Learning Opportunity: 21st Century Learning
Are you curious to know what 21st Century Learning is and how this applies to your child? Join District 96 on February 2, 2012 at Twin Groves Middle School for a 7:00pm presentation.
New Food Service Options:
Elementary Schools – 2nd Entrée and Limited A la Carte Items
2nd Entrée ~ As of February 1st, students will have the opportunity to purchase a 2nd entrée (i.e., the main course only) at a price of $1.25. This option is available only after first purchasing or obtaining a complete Type A Meal (Full price = $2.60). Students previously had only the option to purchase an entire 2nd meal (i.e., entrée, sides and beverage) for $2.60. Just as with the purchase of an entire 2nd meal, the student will need to return to the serving line to purchase the 2nd entrée. The cashier will have the student complete a logbook entry in which he or she will check off the additional item purchased and sign off on the entry.
Limited A la Carte Offerings ~ Elementary students will also now have a limited a la carte menu available to them for an additional charge starting in February. Aramark will display a la carte menu signage and work to educate the children, emphasizing that the items on the snack table are considered “extra” and should be purchased only if the child has obtained parent permission to do so. The items to be offered are shown below. Students may purchase them through the normal serving line. If a child who brought lunch from home wishes to supplement his or her meal with an a la carte item, the child may go through the serving line to do so. As students who bring their own lunch may not have their lunch ID cards available to them once in the cafeteria, those purchasing an a la carte item will also be asked to complete a logbook entry, checking off the extra item(s) purchased and signing off on the entry.
Please discuss these new options with your child and feel free to contact the Food Service Department at 847-325-2592 if you have any questions or concerns.
A La Carte Items:
Teddy Grahams $.80
Whole Grain Cereal Bars $.50
Mozzarella Cheese Stick $.60
Baked Goldfish $.65
Danimals Yogurt $.65
Red-Fat Otis Muffins (Assorted Flavors) $.75
Honey Pretzel Twists $.90
Rold Gold Mini Twists $.90
MAP Testing Continues
Last week we began administering the Measures of Academic Progress (M.A.P.) assessment to all students. This continues this week. The M.A.P. assessment is administered to students three times a year in the areas of reading and math. This assessment allows educators to examine students’ progress in these content areas over time. This assessment is also used to reevaluate students’ need for intervention outside of the regular education classroom. We look forward to sharing your child’s results with you.KIDS Mini-Grant
Our students are invited by the District 96 Foundation to be creative and suggest their ideas for making their classrooms and our school a better place to learn. The Foundation is again accepting nominations online for KIDS mini-grants (Kids Initiating a Difference in School). Please encourage your child to apply. Find the KIDS MINI-GRANT LINK on the front page of the District website. The last day KIDS mini-grant proposals will be accepted is Mon., Jan. 31. Questions? Contact Foundation President Wright Chase wwc11@aol.com
Weather Reminder
- The children have outdoor recess during each school day except in the most inclement weather; therefore, the children’s outdoor clothing should be appropriate for the weather that day. Weather permitting, students go outside for recess every day. In winter the temperature and wind chill and weather conditions will be monitored throughout the morning. The weather Website and playground will be checked and outside supervisors consulted to determine whether conditions are appropriate for children's outdoor recess. When the temperature or wind chill is below zero degrees, students will be kept inside for recess. When the temperature or wind chill is 0–10 degrees, students may go outside for a shortened recess period. If a student has a doctor's note or a medical condition, he or she may stay inside in the building office for recess.
