A Look Back...
Happy Friday the 13th!
What an exciting day we've had!  Most of you probably already know, the area lost power today from about 9:15-11:15 a.m.  Despite the lack of electricity, school carried on.  In this type of event classrooms without windows (natural light) were relocated to a lit area.  Learning continued and this only phased students by their disappointment when the lights came back on!   Thanks to the many second grade families here today for Family Day, for carrying on as if nothing had happened.  We are happy this was still able to take place.  Our 9:30 Keepin' Up With Kildeer parent/principal meeting that was canceled will be rescheduled.  Thanks to the parents who arrived, for your understanding and flexibility.

Cougar Pride Assembly
At our Cougar Pride assembly this week we took time to highlight the Cougar 5 behavior, "Do my BEST!"  As this was our first Cougar Pride assembly of 2012 we discussed what a New Year's resolution was.  A New Year's resolution is when individuals choose something in their life that can be improved and they set a personal goal to improve it.  We discussed how important it is that we take time to reflect on our own behaviors and goals and set a vision for how we can do our best.  Students reflected on which of the Cougar 5 they could give extra attention to and shared this with a partner.  Ask your child to reflect by reviewing the following questions:

  • What is a New Year's resolution? (setting a personal goal to do your best)
  • What are the Cougar 5? (see top of this page)
  • Which did you choose as something you could work to improve?  Why?  What can you do to improve?
    • Example: I chose that I want to focus on "use kind words" because sometimes when I get angry I say things to my friends/sibling/parents I don't mean.  I'm going to ask to "take a break" when I need to so I can take a deep breath and relax before I say things that may hurt someone.
  • Partner with your child.  Is there a plan you can put in place to support them?  Can you help them come up with an action plan?  Or set a date to check in on their progress!
In addition to the focus on doing our best, we recognized students who earned Cougar Paws in December and January.  All students were recognized by Bernie's Book Bank for their tremendous effort and achievement of reaching our book donation goal.  We also thanked two very special adults who are being honored through the District 96 Foundation for their dedication and hard work; Shirlee Nickow, one of our fabulous support staff, and Cindy Lebovitz, a very appreciated and hard working volunteer.

Professional Learning Communities Presentation
This week twenty educators from Wisconsin visited Kildeer to learn how our school functions as a Professional Learning Community. Professional Learning Communities focus their work around the following four critical questions:
  • What do we want students to know and be able to do?
  • How will we know if students learned the concepts?
  • What will we do for students who have not learned the concepts?
  • What do we do for students who have already mastered the concepts?
Kildeer teachers shared how they routinely collaborate with their grade level team and colleagues across the school and district to answer each of these essential questions. They also highlighted how they use formal and informal data to determine students’ prior knowledge and what they learned. Our visitors were extremely impressed with the daily work of Kildeer educators, our school and District 96. The day was a true celebration of the learning that occurs in our school everyday!

Family Reading Night
Speaking of power failures...due to numerous conflicts/difficulty scheduling, Family Reading Night will not be offered again. We again thank everyone for their hard work to put on this fun-filled event.  We are so thankful all sessions had a chance to be seen before the lights went out. We can't wait for next year!
A Look Ahead...

Crazy Hair/Hat Day
Our Student Council is excited to announce Crazy Hair/Hat Day, which will be on Friday January 20th.  All hair products need to be applied at HOME  and NOT at school.

KIDS Mini-Grant
Our students are invited by the District 96 Foundation to be creative and suggest their ideas for making their classrooms and our school a better place to learn. The Foundation is again accepting nominations online for KIDS mini-grants (Kids Initiating a Difference in School). Please encourage your child to apply. Find the KIDS MINI-GRANT LINK on the front page of the District website. The last day KIDS mini-grant proposals will be accepted is Mon., Jan. 31. Questions?
