Our Kildeer family, including all students and staff, came together for another Cougar Pride Assembly this week. Students learned that they earn Cougar Paws when they Show Cougar Pride by Giving Five! Cougar Paws are given out to students when they're recognized for demonstrating expected behaviors. We discussed that being recognized means to have others show their appreciation for the tremendous work the students doing. It's our way to thank students for making Kildeer a fun, supportive and safe place to come and learn every day! When students receive a Cougar Paw they bring it to the office and place it in their grade level basket. Recipient's names will then be read over morning announcements. The Paws are returned to the students so that they may bring them home to share the Cougar Pride they've earned with their families! We announced our first Cougar Paw recipients this week on Wednesday and Friday. You can review expected behaviors included in our Cougar Five with your child at home:
- Follow directions
- Use kind words
- Keep your hands and feet to yourself
- Make safe choices
- DO YOUR BEST!
In addition to our Cougar Pride Assembly, I've been having a great time this week reading a story to each grade that gets at the "why" behind our expected Cougar Five behaviors. The book, Have You Filled A Bucket Today, by Carol McCloud, encourages positive behavior as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness and appreciation. Bucket filling and dipping are metaphors used for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves. I love reading this book to children because it's relevant to all ages and stages of development. Although it appears geared towards a younger audience, it can help to launch meaningful conversations with children at any age. It was a pleasure to work with each individual grade, and I was so happy with their outstanding participation.
Cougar Cross Country Challenge
The Cougar Cross Country Challenge rain date is scheduled for Monday, October 3rd. Let's cross our fingers and hope for a dry day! Please make sure that your child has gym shoes and a water bottle to enjoy this special day of fun and fitness! Students can also show their Cougar Pride by wearing Kildeer spirit wear or our school colors, BLUE and GOLD!
New Report Card and Student/Parent Feedback
I'd like to familiarize parents with new grading marks that you may see coming home on student work, which correspond to our new report card format. The purpose of the new reporting format is to clearly communicate student achievement of grade level specific learning targets and student work habits. Standards give students performance targets to aim for and offer teachers a basis for providing feedback that will help students achieve these standards. There are four categories by which student proficiency is reported:
- Extends (E): A small number of students will receive an E, indicating they are consistently extending (applying more depth) to grade level key concepts, processes, and skills.
- Meets (M): Students receiving an M are currently meeting grade level targets. This is the expectation for the majority of our students.
- Below (B): Students receiving a B are beginning to, and occasionally do, meet the standard. They produce below grade-level work that contains many errors and may need additional support at times to be successful.
- Warning (W): A W indicates that the student is not meeting the standard and has made little progress towards meeting the standard. The student regularly needs additional support and practice to show progress towards grade level expectations.
As a reminder, please join us on October 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Ivy Hall gym for a District level parent information night on Understanding Your Child's New Report Card.
Cold Bar
Kildeer’s food service program has a new daily Fruit & Veggie cold bar. The cold bar will offer students more variety for when they purchase a lunch. The cold bar adds the options of a fresh veggie and/or fruit. To provide an example, a typical cold bar monthly offering will look similar to this:
Fruit Options Veggie Options
M: Grapefruit Celery Sticks with Dip
T: Plums Broccoli Florets with Dip
W: Bananas Baby Carrots with Dip
Th: Grapes Cauliflower Florets with Dip
F: Orange Slices Cucumber Coins with Dip
F: Orange Slices Cucumber Coins with Dip
In addition, students who bring lunch from home will also be allowed to purchase side options from the cold bar if they wish to do so. Students can purchase any of the following: fresh fruit, canned fruit, fresh veggie, hot veggie, or dessert (when offered) for just $0.60 each!
