Kildeer Principal's Message 3/1/13

A Look Back...

Third Grade Musical ~ 3rd Graders put on an amazing show, GO GREEN!  The kids were full of enthusiasm, singing and dancing, while relaying an important message.  Thank you to Mr. Tatar for such a treat!

Foundation Kids Grants ~ I am proud to announce the names of Kildeer Countryside students who are recipients of the 2013 K.I.D.S Grant Awards. During a surprise visit by the District 96 Foundation Prize Patrol, Kildeer’s winners were awarded with balls, cushie fire-proof bean bag chairs and math games.
Four student group projects stood out from a field of fourteen applicants. Two of Ms. Flickinger’s
second grade students, Daniel and Richard, worked along-side fifth grade sponsors, Scout and
Allie, to create a grant for exercise balls to help students learn better because they “get the
wiggles out, keep you out of sleepy or boring zones, and get rid of frustrations before a test.”
To help make learning math concepts fun--third graders, Dalin, Braden and Alexandra, wrote a
grant for games--Smath and Rock’n Math. Two other groups of third graders were surprised
with fire proof bean bag chairs “to help them learn with partners and get and stay focused in
the green zone.” Congratulations to Mrs. Fishman’s students Allie and Abigail as well as Mrs.
Smiths’ students, Katie, Grace and Zosia for finding a way to help fellow students learn in
comfort! More information about K.I.D.S. Grants can be found at www.96foundation.org.

MAP Tests ~ MAP Testing results went home with students today. Please be sure to look for them.

Orchestra Concert ~ WOW!!  How our 4th and 5th grade orchestra students have grown since the beginning of the year.  Principal Katie Schneider of Country Meadows and I were so impressed.  Way to go kids and Mr. Duggan!  If you have a younger student, you should really consider encouraging your child to explore an instrument as they grow through the grades.

 A Look Ahead...

Artsonia ~ Please take a few minutes to vote on Artsonia for Francesa Kula.  Her snake has been selected to be this week's finalist in their contest!  Winner have a chance to win $50 gift certificate to Blick art supplies and school gets $100. You can vote each day. We only have until Saturday to cast votes.  I would love to see Francesa and our school win.
Click here to vote and while you're there, explore the site!  Our kids are so proud to see their work highlighted in this way.  ALL children have their artwork on Artsonia.  It's a great idea for creative keepsakes and gifts, as well.
Thanks,
Mrs. Norman

Author Visit! ~ We are so excited to have Aaron Reynolds join us for a day of reading fun. He will be presenting to our students during the day on Monday, April 22. As a bonus treat, he will also do a different presentation in the evening for parents and families. Our book fair will be happening that evening too. Visit the Kildeer website (right on the homepage) for the order form- Aaron will even sign the books! Books will be on display in the office starting the week of March 4th, and Mrs. Schumer will introduce the books to all the kids. Creepy Carrots will be available the night of the presentation for purchase at the book fair. What a fun night! THANK YOU PTO!  Click here for access to our Learning Center website for more information on this and online resources you'll love!

The Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) will begin on Wednesday, March 6th and conclude on Monday, March 11th. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be tested in mathematics and reading. 4th grade students will also take the science exam.

You will receive information about your child’s performance on the ISAT tests next fall. The test results will be used as one piece of information to guide instruction.

You can help your child do his or her best on the test by:
  • Making sure that your child attends school on the days of testing provided they are not ill;
  • Making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep;
  • Eating a healthy breakfast;
  • Reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if he or she does not understand the test directions;
  • Letting your child know that you have confidence in his or her ability; and
  • Advising your child not to worry about the test – just do the best he or she can.

Please call your child’s teacher if you want additional information or have further questions about these tests. We look forward to sharing the ISAT results with you this fall.

Recess ~ Just as a reminder, students should dress for the "weather of the day" since we go outside for recess as permitted by the elements.  Shorts are discouraged.

Call in student absences ~ Please remember that if you are keeping your child home, you need to call your child out of school for the day. The office is having to make many phone calls home to check on absent students each day.  Thanks for your help with this!

Attention Parents of Fifth-Graders ~ The D96 Parent-to-Parent (P2P) Network is partnering with Woodlawn and Twin Groves Middle School principals and staff to present a brand-new transition program for parents whose current fifth-grade students will be attending middle school in August 2013.

This don’t-miss program on Tues., Mar. 12, @ 7 p.m., Woodlawn Middle School Gym, for ALL District 96 parents of current fifth graders will feature a student panel for Q&A and practical transition tips, middle school staff, and Principals Heather Friziellie and Greg Grana.
