A Look Back...
2nd Grade Musical Performance, ARF! ~ Students wagged their tails, shaking to the groove of the second grade musical, ARF! All students were able to see this event during the school day, and the big show was of course, performed for parents. All had a howling good time! Hats off to Mr. Tatar who brought this all together, and to all of our staff who lent a helping hand! Mr. Emde is always an outstanding stage crew!
A VERY special note to our Kildeer PTO: Thank you for our wonderful new stage lights! We were able to clearly see the students throughout the performance, no matter where they stood. Mr. Tatar helped the audience to see the "before & after" and the difference is dramatic! The lights are a fabulous upgrade to our small gym stage. Thank you so much!

Board of Education Visit ~ Our Board of Education visited Kildeer this week. Students, Julie and Niles of Mrs. Anderson's class, gave the Board a tour of our school to show so many fabulous updates. They also shared some of their favorite things that makes being a Cougar so fun, including ICT Center and the many things we do around having Cougar Pride (our Social Emotional Learning model). Julie and Niles did a fabulous job! In addition to the tour, our Board was able to see the incredible work of Kildeer teachers and staff. This included:
- Learning Center specials time with Mrs. Schumer and how it is connected to student work in ICTC with Mrs. Arbus. Mrs. Schumer oversees the planning and work in both settings (with the help of Mrs. Arbus) and links the learning in these settings to grade level informational text targets and science content.
- Intervention block at two different grade levels when teachers meet students where they are at in their learning and extend their thinking to reach higher levels. They also caught a glimpse of how our Extending Learning Support Team partner with teachers around this and other work to support student learning.
- Seeing our Cougar Communities "buddy classroom" event this week. Every class paired with a different grade level classroom to receive instruction and collaboratively partner around social emotional learning. Kids will be with the same buddies throughout the school year to develop relationships and strengthen our Kildeer learning community. Children learned about empathy and The Golden Rule this week, and discussed the connection between this and our Cougar 5. Check out our NEW SEL website to learn more! Under "Learn More About Cougar Pride" click on "Class Communities".
- An opportunity to meet with our 4th grade team to learn about the work of all staff to help all children reach their maximum potential.
Cougar Communities ~ As mentioned above, all students paired for Cougar Communities around Social Emotional Learning this week. As part of the lesson, students enjoyed a story by Laurie Keller, Do Unto Otters. Here is a link to Laurie Keller's Do Unto Otters page featured on her website ~ It has 4 downloadable activities that parents can do with their children around Empathy and Social Awareness in relation to the book. This is just a fun home link to bring the learning and conversation into your household. http://www.lauriekeller.com/ schoolstuff_otters.html Feel free to have students bring their artwork or activities to school and drop it in the office! We love seeing this work and recognizing students! Thank you!
2012 ILLINOIS STATE SCHOOL REPORT CARDS ~ Now online on the District 96 website! State and federal laws require public schools to release report cards to the public annually, providing the opportunity to compare data–including academic, financial, and demographic information–statewide. Each State School Report Card also includes information on areas of success and planned improvement.
Illinois students in Grades 3 – 8 take the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Reading and math are tested in Grades 3 – 8; science is tested in Grades 4 and 7 only. In overall student performance on the ISAT administered March 2012 in reading, math, and science, 96.6 percent of District 96 students in Grades 3–8 meet or exceed the Illinois Learning Standards.
See STATE REPORT CARDS for each District 96 school, as well as a STATE REPORT CARD FOR THE DISTRICT.
A Look Ahead...
Family Reading Night ~ We have an exciting night planned for you on Thursday, November 15th. More details to come. Please note - festivities begin at 6:30pm not 7:00pm, as published in the school calendar. We apologize for the error.
Halloween At Kildeer~ Just as a final reminder...
Parade, Parties, and Parking: Weather permitting, our Cougar Halloween Parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. We ask that all spectators remain in the front parking lot of our building during the parade and that you do not cover your faces with masks while viewing the parade; this is for the safety of our students. If it's a rainy day, we'll parade inside only, and the event will be for staff and students ONLY. Parents pre-scheduled to work the parties will be let into the classrooms at 1:50 pm (Early Birds) and then at 2:00 pm the remainder of our room parent volunteers will enter to begin the parties. All volunteers must wear a printed badge from the office.
We know how very busy our parking lot is during the parade and parties. We invite you to pull up to the front door and drop party supplies at school prior to 12:20 p.m. We'll store them in the small gym until you arrive later in the day. Our building is closed to visitors during the parade.
Party volunteers, as it has been communicated to you previously, you have a choice of leaving the building at 2:45 pm or after 3:15 pm in order to provide students with safe access to our buses. If you wish to take home your child who is not in the classroom you are hosting, those students MUST bring a note to school in the morning.
- If you are leaving at 2:45, ask your child to meet you in the small gym.
- If you are leaving at 3:15, ask your child to meet in his/her sibling's classroom.
This year, for your convenience, you may park in our bus area; BUT PLEASE NOTE, to park there you MUST be leaving at the 2:45 slot, as our buses need those spaces. This is incredibly important that you follow this, or our buses will not be able to pull in. This will put us in quite a hefty jam if this is not followed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Costumes:
As you are shopping for or crafting the perfect costume, please keep a few things in mind for a school appropriate costume.
- "Kid friendly" in ease of changing: Children come to school in their regular clothes and must change into their costumes independently after lunch. Any hair color or makeup must be applied before coming to school, and must not be a learning distraction (minimal).
- "Kid friendly" for content: No weapons (real or fake!), blood, super scariness, or general ickiness should be a part of the costume. Any hair color or makeup must be simple and should not distract anyone from learning for the day. Also, we assume all costumes will follow our school dress code, meaning no bare tummies or inappropriate clothing (content or fit). Masks following all of the aforementioned guidelines may be worn for the parade, however, not on the bus or throughout the school day.
Thank you for all you do to make this such a special day for all of us.
